A rollercoaster year for Ibra who started off amazingly, often synced well with Leo Messi, had several wonder-assists and won 4 trophies. But as stated in his own book, the relationship with coach Guardiola made the Barcelona-adventure shorter than expected.
So on 26 July 2009 the dream came true. Zlatan was joining mighty Barcelona, the team that had won the "damn Champions League" the previous season and impressed the entire world of football with their tica-taca-football. Behind Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Real Madrid that summer Zlatan became the worl'd second mest expensive signing of all time (€69,5M incl. Eto'o)
HIGH PRESSURE TRANSFER
If Z had pressure on him when joining Juve and Inter that was nothing compared to this. Firstly, he was received by 70,000 (!) fans on Camp Nou. Secondly, he was not only replacing Samuel Eto'o who had scored 36 goals in all comps the season before, Barca paid a huge sum + him for Z.
EARLY TROPHIES
The first two games equaled two trophies, first Barca beat Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup (TROPHY 12), Zlatan had one assist and days after they won UEFA Super Cup (TROPHY 13), but Z did not score. He did however in the Priméra Division-debut at home against Gijón and the relief he obviously felt when scoring that goal was quite noticable. The usual adrenaline-goal gesture was now an excausted laying on the grass-styled one. You could see that Ibra needed that goal.
RECORD START
And after that goal Z delivered and delivered, scoring in his first five league games, setting a new club record for the number of straight games scoring in the league for a new signing. With an additional 2 beautiful assists (see video below) he had made 8 points in 7 straight win games, winning 2 trophies. That's a hell of a start.
ÉL CLASICO
On 29 November it was time for the perhaps biggest game of Zlatan's football career, El Clásico against Real Madrid home at Camp Nou. But Zlatan had been slightly injured the weeks before and was not completely fit, he started the game on the bench. With the two teams making the three biggest transfers of all time before the season (C. Ronaldo €94M, Zlatan €69M, Káka €64M) and with Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Ramos, etc on the pitch this became a historically hyped game. And from a Zlatan-supporter point of view, it ended beautifully. It was 0-0 at half time, Z started warming up directly at the start of second, Camp Nou went mad, he came in the 51st minute and five minutes later he had scored what turned out to be the only, game winning goal, making the 100,000 catalan crowd scream "Ibra, Ibra" from the top of their lungs.
THE SAME OLD IBRA
Zlatan had a completely different role than in both Juve and Inter and with the world's best Messi next to him, Xavi and Iniesta constantly feeding him balls it was a challenge for Zlatan to know how to play sometimes. Should he try and adjust as much as possible, creating space for Messi or should he aim towards being the player he was when he was signed trying to dominate as much as possible? The truth is he adjusted perfectly AND played his own game, until the politics in the team (Messi, Guardiola) changed that and he was forced to not be the Zlatan he was when he was signed.
4 TROPHIES AND 30+ POINTS FROM IBRA
The huge transfer fee combined with Z leaving only one year after makes the verdict of Zlatan's Barcelona-adventure sometimes harsh. The "failure"-phrase is sometimes used and when Inter ironically won the Champions League after him leaving to win it, it's difficult and perhaps unneccesary to view Zlatan's time as succesful as it could have been (if . However, one must not forget the impact he had on the team, scoring 16 goals and 8 assists on 23 starts in the league and scoring twice at Emirates to knock out Arsenal in Champions. Barcelona won the league (TROPHY 14) three points ahead of Real Madrid and they won FIFA Club World Cup (TROPHY 15), giving Barca and Zlatan 4 trophies.
THE PHILOSOPHER
The situation between coach Pep Guardiola and Zlatan is hard do describe without quoting huge parts of Zlatan's book (if you haven't read it, do!). The consequence was nonetheless Zlatan leaving for Milan before next season.

"I hadn't been gone for long. But it felt like it, maybe because I had missed a group game in the Champions League against my old team Inter. But now I was back and only a few minutes had passed when the Brazilian, Daniel Alves, got the ball on the right side. Alves reads the game quickly and the attack was fast. There was a bit of a commotion in the Real defence, and in situations like that, I don't think. I just run into the box, and then the cross ball came, a long pass. I blasted forward.
I was clear in front of the goal and shot a volley with my left foot, bang, boom, goal, and the stadium woke up like a vulcano, and I felt in my body, nothing can stop me now. We won 1-0. I was the man of the match, and was praised everywhere. At that moment no one questioned my price of almost 70 million. I was on fire."

UEFA are continously removing Champions League-videos from the internet. The Dailymotion UEFA Champions League-playlist is meant to complete the Youtube UEFA Champions League-playlist. So all Zlatan's goals/assists should be in either one of them. If you notice a video being removed from youtube or unavailable, it would be much appreciated if you report it to contact@zlatanibrahimovic.com. Thank you in advance. |
