New manager Fabio Capello strongly believed in Zlatan, making him start 40 out of 45 games. Juventus absolutely dominated Serie A with only four losses and with Zlatan scoring 16 debut-goals in the league he was given the "Best Foreign Player"-award.
Coming to Italy, costing €16M after eliminating Italy in EURO 2004 with his extraordinary backhell (and a certain due-due-result), the expectations were not low on Zlatan. Sure, Juve was covered with more great strikers like Del Piero and Trezeguet but Capello had wanted Ibrahimović for a long time and he was not bought to be a rotation player.
GREAT DEBUT
On 12 September 2004 it was time to wear the black-white shirt for the first time, away against Brescia. Leading 2-0 at half time, there was no direct pressure to score but Capello subbed Zlatan, showing him he would get more than 15 min in his debut. You could see on Z's footwork at the first touch that he was there to make a mark. And so he did. In the 69th minute he received the ball alone up front and showed great strength and skill holding back the defender, scoring with his right, then screaming aggressively, showing he was there to stay in the starting XI. And based on their response, his new teammates obviously were really happy for him.
REGULAR IN A WINNING MACHINE
The debut was pretty much it when it came to starting on the bench, Capello showed an amazing confidence in him. And when the team won game after game, who could blaim him? Zlatan was other than goals/assists involved in alot of goals indirectly making the pass to the assister or being part of the build-up. First season in Serie A: 16 goals and 6 assists and another league-title (TROPHY 5)*.
QUARTERFINAL-CURSE BEGINS
Amongst other things, one of the biggest differences playing for Juventus instead of Ajax was the expectations in Champions League. This was a different level, his team was now supposed to be more than a young, cocky upn'comer, they were expected to go far.
Even though Z didn't have one of his best CL-seasons scoring wise, he played all games for the team that eliminated Real Madrid in the round of 16 but then lost against Liverpool in the QF, a situation that turned out to be quite common for Ibra the coming seasons.
FOREIGN PLAYER OF THE SEASON
In the middle of the season after, Zlatan was given the "Best Foreign Player"-award at the Italian football gala (Oscar del Calcio). He was again nominated for Ballon D'Or and finshed 14th best player in the world.
*The Serie A-titles were later stripped from Juventus because of Calciopoli. Zlatan is here still awarded those titles due to the complexity of the case and the world of football's consistent, collective view on Zlatan's right to claim the 2004/05 and 2005/05-titles.

"We were at the top of the league, alongside Milan, we changed between the number one and two spot and for us to win I needed to continue scoring goals. That was the truth, nothing else, and I remember that I really worked hard up there in the box. But I was well marked as well. The opponent defenders were on me like wolves, and it started to get known that I have a temper. The players and the crowd tried to provoke me all the time with dirty tackles and taunts and shit. Gipsy, stuff about my mom and my family, they shouted everything, and sometimes it got to me. There were some head butts, or something of the kind where I tried to get even. But I play my best game when I'm angry, and everything just let go. The seventeenth April I scored a hat trick against Lecce, and the fans got wild and the journalists wrote:
"They said that he score to few goals. He's already done fifteen now."

UEFA are continously removing Champions League-videos from the internet. The Dailymotion UEFA Champions League-playlist is meant to complete the Youtube UEFA Champions League-playlist. So all Zlatan's goals/assists should be in either one of them. If you notice a video being removed from youtube or unavailable, it would be much appreciated if you report it to contact@zlatanibrahimovic.com. Thank you in advance. |
