LONDON.
Zlatan has won his first title with Manchester United and he decided it himself.
He scored the gamewinning goal when Man Utd beat Leicester 2-1 and won the FA Community Shield. What an amazing start in his new club!
– Fantastic to get a win, Zlatan said after the game.
So it was finally time for Zlatan to make his competitive debut for Manchester United. The pressure was on and he stepped up immediately.
LINGARD SOLO-GOAL
Leicester started the game well and pushed back Man Utd in the beginning. They didn't create that many clear chances, but Vardy was on the verge a couple of times and Okazaki headed the ball on to the crossbar. After thirty minutes Man Utd took over and in the 32nd minute right midfielder Jesse Lingard ran through the entire Leicester-defense and scored the opener, 1-0 to Man Utd, which was the halftime result.
FELLAINI GAVE VARDY THE CHANCE
In the 52nd minute Leicester equalized. A counterattack looked like it was over when Fellaini won back the ball but then hit a terrible, too weak pass back to De Gea, which Vardy picked up, ran past De Gea and put the ball in the net, 1-1.
FELLAINI GAVE VARDY THE CHANCE
The second half was quite even and both teams kept possession without creating any huge chances. Mourinho made a couple of substitutions, Rashford replaced Martial and Mata replaced Lingard. Zlatan got a chance from close range in the 80th minute after a nice interception by Rooney, but he didn't hit the ball enough and Leicester-defenders cleared it on the goal line.
ZLATAN STEPPED UP AND DECIDED IT
But Zlatan waited with his best action of the game until when it was needed the most. In the 83rd minute Valencia came down the right side and crossed into the box where Zlatan went up and won the duel against Wes Morgan, and his header went post-in next to Schmeichel. 1-2, Zlatan's first goal for Manchester United and United won Community Shield. Ibra's 31st career title.
Started the game (his competitive debut for Man Utd) and of course backheeled the ball beautifully on his first touch, but then he was quite invisible in the first half. He wasn't as involved in Man Utd's build-up play as he was in the friendly against Everton this week and didn't create any chances.
It looked rather similar in the second. Manchester United failed to create alot of space up front and Zlatan didn't get enough ball. But the most important thing for Zlatan in Man Utd is to score and in the 83rd minute he got his chance.
Antonio Valencia ran on the right and crossed for Ibra, who powerfully pushed away Wes Morgan - won the header duel - and the ball went via Schmeichel's left post and in. Zlatan scored his first competitive goal for Man Utd and won the first title in his new club. Excellent start.
